Drone Inspections to Run Starting June 15

Beginning in mid-June, for about a month VEC will conduct inspections of overhead line infrastructure in 37 towns across our service territory.  (See map). This work will be carried out with the assistance of Firmatek, VEC’s drone contractor. These inspections will help identify line segments that may require maintenance or upgrades.

Over the past several years, VEC has been evaluating the use of drones to conduct proactive inspections of power lines and related equipment. The goal of this work is to identify potential issues before they result in equipment damage or unplanned outages. To date, this technology has proven highly effective. The use of drone technology helps VEC reduce costs and improve system reliability. It also allows overhead lines to be inspected without requiring access to members’ property. VEC is committed to protecting privacy throughout this process. Images will be limited to VEC electrical equipment and will not be shared outside the organization. This work is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and Firmatek is required to comply with all applicable aviation laws as well as best practices recommended by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

Firmatek vehicles used for this work will be clearly marked with “VEC Contractor” signage for easy identification. In addition, drone pilots will wear high-visibility vests labeled “VEC Contractor.” These individuals are representatives of Firmatek and will identify themselves as such upon request.
